Talent attraction is one of the biggest challenges for real estate branch leaders.
And it’s a tough challenge to crack. It takes investment of work, time and typically, money.
But if you get it right, it’s an investment worth making. You want results after all.
The Underlying Challenge of Talent Attraction
The talent market is highly competitive. (No newsflash there).
You need a big-enough, successful-enough team to hit your targets. And so does every other agency and competing office.
So to attract (and keep) talent, you need to stand out from your competition.
Here are 6 things you need to do to stand out from the competition to attract and recruit talent in a market where where bidding for talent is a never-ending challenge:
6 Critical Things You Need to Do to Stand Out from the Competition and become a Talent Attraction Office:
Standing out from the competition is not an easy proposition.
You can’t just wing it. You need to be strategic about your talent attraction strategy and build an attractive employment brand and a great reputation.
There are six things you need to get right if you want to be an office – and a manager – that attracts talent:
#1: Be a great leader and manager that your team rave about
Real estate salespeople are no different than anyone else. They want to work for great leaders (and they definitely leave the bad ones).
Becoming a great manager and leader takes time. It also takes commitment – and learning.
#2: Take your own leadership development seriously
Leadership development is therefore one of the critical success factors for branch leaders. If you are already an excellent leader with a remarkable high-performing team, you are well on your way to being able to market yourself as an attractive proposition to potential talent. If you are not there yet, this an area for you to focus on learning and developing.
#3: Work on cultivating a great place to work that your team rave about
Working in a healthy, enjoyable team is an important factor for most people. Be a leader who creates a safe, fun team environment that supports everyone to succeed.
If you work for a brand where competition between salespeople for commission creates an underlying culture that is quietly dysfunctional, you will need to think through what you need to do to build a functional, healthy culture.
#4: Craft an irresistible employment offer
What makes you epic to work for? Why is your area, your office, your team worth being ‘the one’ they should choose as their place to call home?
Work out all the elements of your offer so you know why people should come work for you. (You’ll need this to be able to focus your operational efforts and your recruitment marketing).
And if you want people to come and work for you, make sure your offer is better than the competitions. Or better yet, make it irresistible. (And make sure it’s honest! It won’t take long for people to work it out – and to kill your reputation if you don’t deliver what you promise).
Critical note: It helps if you work for a brand with an attractive employment offer. If not, you will have to think this through as to whether you put pressure on head office, switch brands, or do the work yourself to combat the competition.
#5: Market your employment offer
You’d never put a house on the market without marketing it and expect people to know about it.
Once you have an irresistible offer, get it out there. Tell people about it. Share why people should come work for you. If it costs time and money to do it, do it. Your stand out competition will be.
#6: Look after your people and set them up for success from Day 1
From the day you meet a possible new recruit, treat them well. Don’t just hire them and leave them to it. Be ready to help them to hit the ground running – and nurture them and their potential.
Whether they are new to real estate or have moved to join you, there will be lots of new learning they’ll need. Their success requires that they apply their knowledge and skills – but it also requires they possess those skills and knowledge in the first place.
Set them for success and support them with the critical learning and development they need to succeed.
To stand out from the crowd and become an office that easily attracts talent isn’t easy. It takes strategy, skill and work. But it’s work worth investing in.
Have an epic offer that is better than the competition. Lead your office in a way that makes it a fantastic place to work. Stay on top of your offer. And build a great reputation.
If you don’t, your ability to recruit talent will be limited, and likely, ad hoc in nature. And you won’t even get a look in by discerning, experienced talent who are tired of their existing office/manager – and are committed to finding an epic team and manager of an epic office to work with.
If, somehow you manage to hire talent without doing the work, the likelihood of retaining them in the face of competition, will be slim when more strategic leaders do their thing and poach them right out from under you.
Don’t let that happen.
